Skip,
Here's the strut on my door. I also got mine from McMaster Carr. You
can see their online catalog at www.mcmaster.com .
My strut is called a gas spring with threaded ends and it's on the lower
part of page 1061 in the online catalog. The part number is 9417K11. It
comes in several different extension forces. I tried 20 lb initially and
just switched to 30, as the original one was sagging a bit. I used a clevis
fitting on one end and a ball and socket on the end that attaches to my door
hinge. I drilled a hole in the hinge and tapped it for the ball. The end
fittings are on page 1063 and 1064 of the catalog.
Be advised that if you use a strut, you'll need to stiffen your baggage
door or it will bow out from the force of the compressed strut.. I used a
few bid of carbon to stiffen mine.
