Glass and epoxy would be stronger but the cotton is less dense than glass and less of a pain to sand. There is also Kevlar pulp that's a real hoot to use! Stronger by far and very light but you may as well shoot yourself when you try and sand it. It is a remarkably efficient thixotrope however. A very small amount makes a lot of resin very viscous.
