I heard that someone at the Lancair fly-in was taking skin temperature
readings on different colored airplanes.
Steve,
Perhaps it was me. I originally wanted to paint my 320 with a
specialmetallic-like "chameleon" material. I tested samples of white, black and several metallics by affixing temperature indicating strips to the back and taping them to a clear plastic sheet so I could read the temps. This was suspended on a ladder, out of the wind, in the noontime June sun at the Chicago latitude. The readings indicated (volatile human memory circuits in play here) that white was easily 40F cooler than black and all of the metallics were only 10F, or so, cooler than black. I don't remember the high actual temperatures, but there was no concern that the oven cured pre-preg, good to ? (140F, 240F, I don't remember) would not be adversely affected. I did worry that waiting for a takeoff clearance on a hot sunny day would result in me and the electronics cooking. Of course, I later discovered that the bubble canopy was the real culprit and a Kogan sunshade was a necessity. I ultimately chose a paint scheme with white on the top and Extreme Rainbow limited to areas below the longeron.
