No doubt about it. Time may be a consideration, but there is a HUGE
difference in the peel strength of a good adhesive like the Hysol available
from Lancair and epoxy flox. Want to prove it to yourself easily? Grab
four chips of 6 bid glass or throw away pieces of prepreg. Bond two with
epoxy flox and two with Hysol or other high peel strength adhesive leaving a
bit of overhang so that you can grip them to pry them apart. Wait a couple
of days and try to pull them apart. The epoxy/flox bond will come apart.
The Hysol bond will be impossible to pull apart without destroying the glass
pieces.
Having said that, I'm guessing that the peel stresses on wing and other
panels in our glass rockets are fairly modest when compared to the peel
strengths of even epoxy/flox. As some of the postings suggest, there may be
numerous early birds flying around still that were sold and built without
any of these nice adhesives. If they work ok, there's no reason why a plane
assembled more recently with the same material should be dangerous.
I'd advise getting specific advice from Lancair. Mark Mahnke, if he said
epoxy/flox is ok to close wings, elevator, rudder and glue the tail feathers
on, etc. could make me feel pretty good about that if the quality of work is
up to par, but I fear you misquote him when you attribute the comment that
the only difference is in the setting time.
