Marv -
Thanks for your (private) response to my request for help
yesterday concerning the problem I'd encountered in disassembling my 320's
hydraulic gear cylinders. Although I haven't tried it yet, I'm sure you've
identified the problem - that the drilled and tapped holes for the AN
fitting are integral with the end caps and therefore, the AN fittings must
be removed before the end cap and shaft assembly can be removed.
I also received the following response from Fred and thought
others readers might like to read it as well as my response to him...just a
few tidbits that may be entertaining...

Bill, Caught your picture in Sport Aviation receiving an award for
your
nice looking 320. Looks real good.Sorry to hear about your cylinder
problems. I also have havd such problems.Replaced two with  "O"
rings and
one altogether, but my biggest problem is the Dump valve. I'm on my
3rd one
in 3 plus years. Again , Congradulations. Fred N9BF.

Fred -
Good to hear from you. Right now, I'm struggling to finish a
large-scale project on my plane to get ready for a run at grand champion
at
Sun n' Fun, although it looks doubtful that I'll be able to finish in
time.   Last night, I found someone local who does metal polishing and
took my main gear wheel aluminum wheel castings to him for polishing to
give
them a chrome-like appearance. Afterward, I'll have them shot with clear
coat. They're supposed to be complete next Wednesday. This is what was
done
on the Lancair that was featured in February Sport Aviation.   I recently sent my exhaust to Dawley Aviation in Wisconson for
ceramic coating. I had it done in silver, which gave it a nice, frosty,
chrome-like appearance. Not only does a plane have to be built to the
highest standards, but has to have all the "touches" in order to have a
chance at grand champ.   When building, I made the mistake of using spray can "automotive
trunk" paint in my gear wells. I had seen other builders use it and went
ahead and used it myself, even though I had misgivings about it. I found
out
the hard way that it's water-based junk and didn't take long to start
flaking off. Because I now have to remove and rebuild all the hydraulic
cylinders, I decided to grab the bull by the horns and strip and repaint
the
gear wells in the process. It took almost three hours per gear well to
remove everything. Masking, painting and then replacing everything will
probably take at least ten more hours per well.
I bought the new engine mount rubbers last Fall and am just
getting ready to install them. Many other things too numerous to
mention...
Marv told me that the drilled and tapped ports on the gear
hydraulic cylinders are integral into the end caps, so the AN fittings
have
to be removed in order for the cap and shaft assembly to slide out.     What was the nature of problems with your "dump valve"? I've never had
a problem with
mine!
