Maybe this is a dopey posting,
but I think I'm missing something here in all the discussion about air
conditioning systems for our birds. I pulled up a raft of aftermarket A/C
companies on the internet the other night, folks who make complete systems for
vintage cars and the like. Near as I can tell, you can buy a complete
system, compressor, both coils, fan, controls, plumbing (Aeroquip hoses, no
less) -- the works -- for between $800 and $1200. A couple of the
companies are kind of apologetic because on something really off the wall, you
might have to make your own compressor mounting bracket.
So, I look at the postings about
these aircraft systems, which have exactly the same elements, maybe with longer
hoses, and a scoop (for some of them). The prices are $6000 to
$8000. So, what am I missing here? Are we really chumps, us airplane
drivers?
