I'm going to install a Whelen 600 wingtip light this weekend -- that's the one which includes the red/green position light in the front, a strobe in the middle, and a white light at the back end.  My question is simply "where exactly do I locate it?"

I'm familiar with the FAR's, at least with the drawing in the Aircraft Spruce catalog showing that the strobes must both be visible from 1200 feet behind the aircraft.

The wingtip is slanted so that the wingspan is narrower at the front than at the rear.  Presumably I should slide the lighting unit aft until the strobe is not fully obscured by the aft edge of the wingtip?  Or should I just put it halfway between the leading edge and the trailing edge and say "that's close enough?"

Has anyone had an FAA inspector look closely at the wingtips and verify that the lights are visible 1/4 mile behind the aircraft?

By the way, I should probably apologize to the folks at Lancair whose names I've (silently) taken in vain when contemplating installing "those crappy wingtips".  They really are turning out very nicely!  They really stiffen up when they are installed, and I have high confidence that mine will turn out as nice as all the finished ones I've seen at the airshows.
