I recently landed at Sedona, AZ while trying to utilize the famous "Airport Vortex" to automatically extend the gear when close to the mesa -- Don't do it! This technique failed on the first try and I am reluctant to try it again after the engine is torn down, the prop replaced, and the cowling and belly are repaired. The good news is that a gear up landing gives one the thrill of a luge ride, but with somewhat more noise. Just a couple of hundred feet of grind-out, then a full stop 10 feet in front of the taixway exit sign, thus saving an additional $2500 of cost in not having to replace the sign. In a short time I met the Sedona police department, the fire department, the airport manager and two clever guys from the local towing company. Raising the bird, applying the "gear down" switch (better late than never) and kicking the stones jammed in the nose door got her to stand on her own 3 feet.
