Like others, I have "self-insured" the hull for in-flight since such a loss would probably not be repairable - either me or the airplane. I do use the plane for travel and cannot always control the circumstances under which it is parked, ergo the desire for "comprehensive", not-in-flight hull coverage. Passenger coverage is less important to me since I can only carry one and I generally require that they be pilots. A pilot would have a hard time claiming he didn't know the risk, especially after seeing me land.
Most importantly, $1,000,000 liability coverage allows possible flight into Mexico or Canada. Ok, if you don't care about that, 1 mill is needed to race. Now, that is something I NEED.
Re Avemco: while they seem to be pricey, there were some strange, but useful benefits by holding their homebuilt policy. One could get first flight coverage for no additional cost if EAA tech counselors and Flight advisers were consulted. Liability coverage was extended for up to 3 years after the aircraft was sold - no additional cost, etc. Now I am looking for someone else because they have basically abandoned the performance homebuilders and there is nothing the EAA is capable of doing about it.
