The ACK ELT with batteries is quite heavy, let's say 5 pounds -- At 9 G's that's 45 pounds.  Make sure the shelf is strong enough for flight and also strong enough to hold the ELT in case of a crash - say, 15 G's deceleration, 75 pounds.

Try to choose a location that will survive a crash.  The tail section is usually still sticking out of the smoking hole -- unless you fly an A-300, in which case your ELT may fall off before the crater and spoof the CAP search team.

Fly safe so you don't have to activate the ELT.
