For what it is worth --

In the expendable rocket world it is routine to thermal cycle cables that have soldered connections (solder cups on the connector pins) but not to do so with crimp connections.  Poor solder joints would often be detected by continuity loss, particularly at cold temperatures.  I think we went down to -40F.  This is not to say that solder is inferior to crimp, or the other way, that crimp is superior to solder.  It's just an interesting little-known fact.

Which, by the way, is totally irrelevant to Brent's point, which is that he feels that a splice is superior to a connector.  I don't doubt that a splice can be made more reliable than a connector, but I think there are many places where it makes sense to have a connector for maintainability.  Brent disagrees, but that's his prerogative.
