       Rob, I read your question and rationale for using soft rivets to 
hold the nutplates and agree with your logic. In watching a fellow RV 
builder install nut plates in his wing and tail fairings (fiberglass), he 
damaged the thin material by using the hard rivets that were provided as 
"standard" in his kit. I gave him a few soft rivets with essentially your 
rationale. They worked much better, easier, and neater. Function just fine. 
If you are
fastening the nut plates to aluminum hinge, I'd think either the hard or 
soft rivets would work. I'd be very careful about using soft rivets in 
metal where  there is any kind of shear structural load as you note, but 
for nutplates,
this load is small and only occurs when tightening/loosening the 
associated  screw/bolt......Bob Pastusek
