I recall flying behind a Jacobs radial almost 60 years ago that had one magneto and one battery powered coil and distributor. The battery powered system ran the engine better but the magneto would get you home when the generator failed. I think the safest and best trade is still one magneto and one electronic system. They are completely separate and the trip home is not time limited. Ross W.
