We need some advice from the group about our LNC2 elevator trim tab
installation (large tail).
Instead of using a 20” aluminum hinge for the trim tab, we are using a
carbon hinge from John Barrett. The plan is to attach the hinge with
Hysol on both the elevator and trim tab halves with securing rivets on
the ends to prevent the hinge from starting to peel off. This
installation will make it necessary to pull the hinge pin to remove the
trim tab. There are two questions. Will there be sufficient room
between the inboard end of the hinge and the rudder/vertical stabilizer
to remove the pin, should this ever be necessary – without severely
bending the pin? Is there some nonpermanent way to secure the inboard
end of the pin to prevent it from sliding out inboard? The plan is to
permanently secure the outboard end of the hinge pin by filling half of
the last outboard hinge loop with epoxy to prevent the pin from sliding
out outboard.
A related question – with the MAC servo motor installed as far forward
as possible (up against the elevator spar), the distance between the
attachment hole on the servo actuator arm and the attachment hole on the
trim tab hinge arm where the threaded actuator rod is to be attached is
so short that it will be impossible to use the two clevis’ that came
with the servo motor. What is needed are two compact clevis connectors
for the threaded rod, not the 1.5 ” long units that were provided. Are
these available somewhere or is it time to make another trip to the
machine shop?
Thank you.
