Hi Jim,

I'm pretty sure you are going to hear a lot about why you should have rudder
pedals (most people install them), so I will toss in my controversial
thoughts.

I don't have rudder pedals. The only people I want to perform takeoffs and
landings in my plane is my partner and people similar to Lancair
checkpilots. Other pilot friends, and even CFI's (BFR etc) have to do
without. This hasn't been a problem so far, but I can see why some CFI's
might hesitate.

You can still take transition training in your plane. I did and had no
problems. Many people check out in single seat types without problems. But
of course a checkout at Lancair is preferable.

The drawbacks are:
1) When I show pilot friends they cannot really try out slow flight, using
the rudder on altitude. Most don't mind, they don't want to stall anyway.
2) When I initially checked out in the Lancair I was a bit nervous. But my
instructor was not, he was sitting calmly in the right seat.

The highlights are:
3) Save a bunch of friction in the rudder linkup. This is a problem on some
320.
4) Save some weight and footspace.
5) Much simpler brake system.
