One correction to Jim's excellent post - technically, the "flow divider" or
distributor does NOT meter fuel to the injectors - at high flow the
distributor valve is fully open, connecting all the injectors together. If
one injector plugs, yes, the flow will go to the others, but not because of
the flow divider. At idle it is the opposite, and the flow divider does at
least attempt to distribute the fuel equally. You could replace the flow
divider with a simple "cross" and the engine would run exactly the same at
full load. It likely wouldn't idle very well, though.
