When I was in the Navy, we had to wear float coats on the flight deck that we could auto inflate by yanking on a chord to inflate the coat. A life preserver will keep you afloat....but, as was mentioned....how visible are you? As a tool to be seen if swept off the deck we had a strobe that was capable of being used that could be seen for a long long way. I found them for sale in the ACS catalog under the pilot supplies section. They are called Firefly Rescue Lite. These are the same units that were standard issue in the Navy. It will definitely increase your chances of being seen. Now the only question is...how long can you survive while you float in water that is less than your body temp before hypothermia sets in and you die from exposure.
