If you are not in raft you probably won't survive. A life jacket keeps you afloat but only your head is out of the water. How large is your head-- think about what a rescuer in a plane is looking for. Having been through Navy water survival training a number of times including  spending more than one afternoon in the drink waiting for a helicopter off Pensacola Beach and San Diego and participating in more than a few Search and Rescues-- I would strongly recommned taking a raft if flying over any body of water you could not traverse while swimming. On other words, "how far can you swim?"
