Regarding your trip to the Bahamas, my theory has always been that you are never far from a quick pick-up should you ditch. I flew to N. Eleuthera 4 times this year and can not remember a time over the water that I did not see either land, or at least 1 boat. Life jackets should suffice IMHO.
