This summer, I took off from my home field (COE) and, probably due to the many lakes around here, as I got up to cruise speed, I encountered a Bald Eagle just ahead off my right wing. Unbelievably, he was carrying a fish almost as big as he was! I think he saw me before I saw him (or her - gotta stay politically correct) but in any case, he did a tumble to get out of the way and in the process, dropped his catch. With the thin plexiglas canopy on the 235, I'm glad (very glad) he saw me when he did. Big as they are, you don't see them at even the 235's cruise speed. As a matter of habit, brought with me from the LA area, I always turn on my landing light when in the vicinity of the airport, going or coming. Can't be sure but that may be what caught his attention. Heads up out there when near lake country and keep your lights on when below cruise altitude. May be what saved me from a very unhappy encounter - for me and the eagle!
