I have an all-electric dual bus system. This was my Lancair's first flight after being down 5 months for modifications and paint. Both gyros appeared fine during pre-start, taxi, takeoff, climb, and a shallow banking turn. However, as soon as I exceeded about 25-30 degrees of bank, BOTH gyros tumbled. Somewhat confused, I sent both gyros out to be bench tested - both tested fine. When I reinstalled the two gyros, I noticed the new plastic spacers did not have quite enough clearance in the cutouts, preventing the caging knob from FULLY retracting. Once I fixed this clearance problem (allowing the caging knobs to fully retract), the gyros worked perfectly. Cost of my lesson - $250 for bench tests. Potential cost of my lesson had it been actual IFR? - a lot more.
