Hi Marv,
Someone asked about overhauls recently and Vincennes U was mentioned. Since I'm just 30 min South, I inquired and this is the response. Earl

Subject Re Engine overhaul? 0-200
The good, the bad, and the ugly of engine overhaul.
The good
We can usually get through a O-200-A under 6,800.00 (core engine, no accessories, no airframe work i.e. repaint engine mount, wiring, etc.
We don't charge labor. We charge 20% on the (read this part carefully) on the parts that we purchase for the engine.
Note Although this could mean some cost savings if you buy some of the parts its often the case that even with our 20% tacked on, most parts are still far below retail.
All components are returned to factory new tolerances. Versus overhaul manual minimums.
We will go with any STC's, mod's, aftermarket cylinders, etc. you would like to employ.
A O-200 is one of the fastest and most inexpensive engines to overhaul.
The bad
Overhaul class is just coming to an end for this year and we only offer it once a year.
Historically an engine overhaul lasts much longer than the class. Some major project have carried on to the next years class. (I cannot imagine this with an O-200)
We will not cut corners even for an engine intended for a homebuilt (which is a bad idea anyway), the class is intended to teach engine overhaul to a level 3 status which means it is to be certified as airworthy.
The Ugly
It would be best to remove your engine in your hangar because the great powers-to-be have moved Autobody technology into one of our main hangars and space around here is at a premium. We often have to store planes outside for room. This becomes a paradox, however, when you consider that we like to run the overhaul class first, then after Christmas run the powerplant systems and installation class. The second class gives you the installation, run-in, and final configuring (idle speed, idle mixture, magneto timing, etc.) for the overhauled engine. The best course of action here would be discussed at the time overhaul is considered because our facility situation is a fluid issue.
These are a few of the highpoints please feel free to make further inquiry. Keep in mind I am the parts manager and the program chair is Rick Weidig (rweidig@indian.vinu.edu). Mr. Weidig also runs the engine overhaul class and has final say on all matters.
Thanks,
