Well, Tom, one answer is that Facet pumps fail on occasion and with two
pumping from a wing via a selector valve, you can always get at the fuel in
both wongs. With one pump dedicated to one wing tank, a pump failure (which
I've experienced) suddenly transmutes the remaining fuel in the associated
tank from 100LL to unobtainium. A neat trick in the laboratory, but
unfortunate in flight.
In my opinion, connecting both pumps (in series, in my case) to the fuel
source with a selector valve means you're still carrying the weight of two
pumps but making a more logical use of them.
