RE : Stormscope artifact in a IV P, Phil from Melbourne.
I had similar woes with my BFG. Only, in the same position you speak of, ALL
quadrants
Kirk skin mapped my plane, N61BW, and discovered that by moving the dome
antenna approximately one length aft on the tailcone belly that only the
tail strobe would cause artifact on it. He proposed 3 ways of singularly or
in combination dealing with that to nullify. The plane is tested on the
ground with all avionics on. Whether this is a true comparison to in flight
environ I am not certain. This was done after doing what I mention below.
At my first Annual we did something that seemed to effect a reduction in the
artifact. We took flat woven cable and grounded the carbon wings to the
metal hinges of the control surfaces on my wings and horizontal stabilizer.
I have a static wick system installed. I fly in the 48 states, mostly the
Midwest, and it is often humid. We discovered that the leading edges were
developing tiny craters like a discharge of static build up that wasn't
being effectively dissipated. It appears that after that, I can dial my BFG
to the 100 nautical mile range now and have a static free screen to watch
except for right on the right nose of the plane. I have blown diodes in my
Jim Frantz Proprietary Systems annunciator DPU and so my avionics man and I
are going to look at my voltage regulator and the way the annunciator DPU is
wired, ground faults, Power and ground connections to the Hydr. pump, etc.
next.
I have flown very near a fleeting pop up thundershower since and it was
revealed on my BFG as it blipped in and out of existence in it's fleeting
life and confirmed it when landing only minutes later at an airport with
Doppler radar history on computer that corresponded to just when I was
flying in that location.
I am very interested in this topic as well as I want to have a usable,
reliable BFG stormscope. That is why I had it installed!
