My normal coolant sensor is at the thermostat and you would think that would be measuring the hottest part of the coolant (after its made a trip from the pump to the rear housing and back to the thermostat opening), but when I connected a temp gauge to the rear sensor it measured hotter. Perhaps because it is on the side of the engine where the spark plugs are (and the metal nearest the spark plugs gets the hottest) but as it joins the rest of the coolant flow back to the thermostat its peak temp lowers somewhat as it distributes it to the rest of the flow. Just a guess of course.
