rusty -- local builder, randy lervold, sold his -8 and is building a -3.  actually -3 sales have had a recent serge, I think something like 5 last year.  typical of randy, he has an incredible web site documenting his journey.  you should check it out.

Subject: [FlyRotary] Re: engine mount geometry

I see it there is a centerline of the fuselage and a centerline of the engine/redrive.  if I mount them such that they are 1 1/2 degrees out of parallel, then those centerlines will intersect.  my question is where?

I agree with Marvin.  I'd shoot for keeping the prop hub where the stock cowl is, and move the back of the engine.  This will lose some space on the intake/exhaust side, but in that fat RV-8 cowl, it shouldn't be a huge problem.

On a side note, RV-8, 20B, 2.85 drive... Damn!!!  I'm convinced that I'd still have my RV-8 if I had put a rotary engine in it.  It was a GREAT plane.  In fact, I almost bought it back, with the intentions of selling the Lycoming FWF, and installing a rotary.  Man, don't get me started thinking about this again :-)

Rusty (eventually, my RV-3 will perform like I want it to)
