Hi Ed, if you discharge a battery below 10V they are sometime permanently damaged. You may have a shorted cell that makes the alternator work harder?

Simpler than a fuse :-)
I'm curious, what amperage is the breaker? Have you ever measured the current through it during operation? I recall that I used a 5A breaker on the RV-8 (35A alt), which was the only breaker in the entire plane. The only reason I had it was to allow electric Bob's crowbar circuit to work.
