John, The answer is that you should not have done ANYTHING until you corrected the obviously too rich mixture (black exhaust smoke, etc). It takes very little time to foul plugs, O2 sensors, etc when this rich. Things were hopelessly fouled up after the very first taxi you made in this condition. Next time you get it started, make sure you have fresh plugs & O2 sensor installed and run engine to ~ 22" Hg MAP. Adjust mixture control to get a smooth run if possible. Use mode 3 to get a mid range mixture indication at 12:00 on manual mixture control. Be thoroughly familiar with what you need to adjust on the EC2 (read the manual) before you even hit the start button. Any delay will result in chasing secondary problems due to fouling. If you fail to recognize the symptoms of each and every problem and correct them immediately, you get into an endless loop of problems. There are many other problems that can cause the engine to be hopelessly rich at low throttle even if you got it right at mid range throttle (22" Hg). I've lost count of the number of builders that had this problem due to not connecting the manifold pressure sensor, wrong pressure regulator, no pressure regulator, primary injectors too large, regulator set too high, not using a MAP compensated fuel pressure regulator, (list is endless, or so it seems). No, but Tracy & Ed have. I spoke to them both at length today trying to figure out why my engine won't start. Difficult for them to contribute from long distance, but I got some good ideas and things to try. Thanks guys.
Good news is that I spent most of the past 2 days getting some Cozy time with Paul Conner in Dan Crugers Cozy IV. So, once I can get mine running right, I should be able to fly it without hurting myself. We did one high speed taxi test in mine, but aborted just before lift off.
Bottom line with my engine seems to be that, unlike me, its VERY VERY rich. You can't use mode 3 with the engine off, and it won't start. :(
Even with the new EGO sensor, my air/fuel gauge is doing weird stuff again (when it did run yesterday). Mostly it seems to sit in the middle whatever I do with the mixture. Exhaust (when it runs) is visible BLACK soot. On the prop, in the air, on the exhaust, and presumably all over the o2 sensor. Even the oil seems to be absorbing black particles. After cranking the plugs are soaked. If it runs they're black.
Any ideas? Wild guesses?
