Do the multimeter thing. Disconnect the O2 sensor lead from everything else
and just connect the multimeter to it.
How's your ground path from the
exhaust (O2 sensor ground) to your O2 instrument
ground?

The way I
installed the old Mixture gauge, I have the ability to connect any
combination of EM-2, Gauge, and meter. I'll know more when I get a
chance to do some further testing.
