That is correct, John.  If you leave the Mazda RX-7 thermostat out or use any other type/make of thermostat, then you need to plug the recirculation hole in the water pump housing.  According to one of Racing Beat's tech articles in their catalog, if you do  not then plug the hole you can lose up to 20% of your cooling effectiveness.
