Hi Steve,

Yes, max has a “stock” 13B about 1989 vintage with Tracy’s EC2 and RD-1 (2.17:1) gearbox and my EFISM.  Stock ignition coils.   Sorry, don’t have any photos.  Max and I have  conversed for years and I have provided him with some of the more technical information he needed.  Max is a superb custom cabinet maker by profession and naturally built a wooden aircraft {<wlEmoticon-openmouthedsmile[1].png>)

I know Max has been flying with the same engine for around 10 years and regularly used his rotary powered bird for business trips.  I  am convinced he would have had an uneventful trip on his first attempt if he had not had to leave his aircraft outside a hangar in Greenland where it was exposed to a downpour all night and got water into the fuel system.  About 5 minutes after takeoff the next day, his engine started ingesting water contaminated fuel and began losing power and sputtering all while Max is flying below a low ceiling and in mountainous terrain.

By the time he got it back to the airfield, Max’s nerves were somewhat frayed and he decided to postpone the trip to give him time to figure out what his next steps were.  So back 9 months later, fires up the engine and away he goes all the way to Austria this time.

That is great news on the fuel pump.  Always want to have availability to every cup of fuel especially when making long flights over water.  You never can be certain that weather won’t change (particularly in the North Atlantic) by the time you get to your planned destination.  Always good to have sufficient fuel to continue on or return if absolutely necessary.  I’m sure Max is feeling more secure about the remainder of the flight now that he has access to all of his fuel, I certainly would be.

Way to go, Max!

Ed, he is flying with less fuel.  He had to fly from Narsarsuaq, G to Kulusak, G. Then he refueled and pushed on to Reykjavik.  So he is being forced to plan shorter routes.

Yes, once airborne with good weather and the flieger running well, its sometimes just best to press on.  Good for Max, well - him making the trip from Narsarsuaq, Greenland to Reykjavik, Iceland presumably without refueling means his next leg should be no problem, range wise.

Yea! for Max

Well I can't keep up with our buddy Mr. Max. He just informed me that he landed in Reykjavik 1 hour ago.  I guess the weather has been good and he felt good to keep flying and take advantage of the long days of those high latitudes.

This just from him.

Flieger is wunderbar!
Was very scared to fly over only ice to Kulusuk
Wait till you see the pictures

I just spoke with Max.  He just landed in Kusulak, Greenland.  He said the flieger flew like a charm.  He also said the scenery up there is unbelievable.  He will post or send pictures later.
Since no airport operates in Greenland on Sunday, depending on the weather, he will next fly to Kevjlvik, Iceland and then onto Reykjavik after that.

Some of you have been replying to me individually and it is easier to keep this as a group messaging as I can't repeat the same things individually.  So if you respond, please keep it to the whole group with Reply To All.

For those who were not in the chain, to recap - Max is still in Narsarsuaq, Greenland.  Yesterday he discovered a bad fuel leak coming from under the fuselage.  There was some damage to the skin but nothing he is too concerned with. He determined it was a fuel transfer pump from the 2 wing tanks.  He is unable to fix this.  So he plans to fly with less fuel and therefore change his route to leap frog from shorter distances rather than longer stretches as he was originally planning.

I just heard from him in the past 20 minutes and this is the latest news:
He just this moment texted me and said the weather is looking good and he will most likely fly today up the coast of Greenland to Kulusuk. All the airports are closed on Sunday in Greenland and he will attempt Monday or Tuesday to fly to Reykjavik, Iceland.
He said he slept very well and the last test flight he did yesterday it flew very well.

The sun is not his biggest issue.  The pics of the leak and what it did to the underside of the plane does not look good.

Just heard from Max via text. He is still in Greenland waiting for better weather.  It's been cloudy and rainy there.  He will try again tomorrow.  He is planning now to go direct to Iceland and not up the coast to Kusulak.  I will keep you posted as I hear from him.  Internet sucks up there.  He has to pay by the hour.

New news.

After a few sputz and spurts Max started up the engine and he did a test flight around Narsarsuaq, Greenland.  All seems well and it looks like he will embark on his mission tomorrow.  He seems to think the problem was water in the lines which has since evaporated.

He posted a video of his first starting of the flieger and also some pics from his flight.

No problem Ed.  I just received a message from Max that he will call me shortly- will keep you all posted.
Max also posted some pics on his FB page.  He spent the night in a tent sleeping next to his flieger.  He said he did the paste test for the gas tank and there were no traces of water.
He plans to start it up within the hour and if all runs well he plans on leaving tomorrow.
The weather has been clear and favorable.

To those maybe not on Facebook.  I just saw a post from Max with his flieger in Nausuak, Greenland.  He had a short video of hand turning the prop.  He said it was stuck and he got them loose.  Tomorrow he will test to see if it runs.
