When I learned to fly in the old Tri-Pacer all it had was a cabin speaker and a handheld carbon mic – I had younger ears then at it was sufficient. Now I have
two airplanes and 2 hangars at two different airports and 2 headsets. Went to fly the Tri-Pacer on the weekend – guess where the headsets were? The speaker is still there and functional as is the old carbon mic; they got me through a pinch. I had forgotten
what the airplane really sounds like: all the rattle and shake from the Lycoming is unabated and the wind noise in-flight is much more apparent. I won’t make a habit of flying without headsets but it was an enjoyable ½ hour flight down memory lane.

If wired direct to the radio, instead of going through an intercom, it might have some backup benefits in case of intercom outage.
