How about a cheap scanner radio, or even a cheap handheld aviation radio? No drain on the a/c battery, no extra complexity, no extra installed weight, and you'd have a spare comm device if you carry the aviation handheld with you. Admittedly more expensive than just a speaker, but a lot less work.
