If the shaft is removed, t= his would result in a leak in the main bearing supply. I don't know if thi= s would cause problems and didn't want to find out. As a result, I left th= e shaft and gear in place, made a spacer to mimic the presence of the oil m= etering pump, and installed a block off plate.
