Welcome to the club of aircraft systems designer/maintainer shame. I agree that a fuel problem is most suspicious, but for tools you should just bring everything. Be prepared to remove the engine while you are there, or re-wire it, or re-design the fuel system. That way you wont be sorry. I know what are feeling in terms of wrapping your head around what just happened and what might be the cause.
