One more comment on the EGT connection / accuracy.   The type of termination you use to the thermocouple wire at the connector can affect accuracy a little.   Also, a big factor is using the proper wire (type K ) for extensions on the thermocouples.   Worst case is using copper wire for extension and doing the splice under the cowl (high temp area).   this will cause significant errors.

Here is cheap:
Hook up your thermocouple leads to a good Fluke Meter, reading Milivolts.
Figure out what type thermocouple probe is in your engine, then go to the link and read the voltage/temp. selection.
Pick you type thermocouple, and the Farenheit conversion. Print it out and take it flying. Read the milivolts on your Fluke, read the temp off the chart.
If the two pyro readings had been running close, then read one on the Fluke, the other still connected to the monitor you have been using. Now you can see if you have a calibration issue.

Lynn...what is your definition of "cheap" re. an "unpowered cheap EGT gauge"? I
did a search and found an EGT gauge for $115 but it didn't say if it was
"unpowered" or not. Do you know of a good source for these? Thanks! Doug.
