Aerochia's LT-1
It's real, it's flying, and it's
coming to AirVenture Oshkosh this year. We're talking about the
Aerochia LT-1, a new experimental amateur-built kit with a speed
range from 60 to 160 mph. Andy Chiavetta, EAA 508794, has

DIMATTEO NAMED EAA VICE PRESIDENT OF
AIRVENTURE FEATURES AND ATTRACTIONS
Jim
DiMatteo, a decorated U.S. naval aviator who has served in several
aviation leadership positions, is joining EAA as vice president,
AirVenture features and attractions. In that role, DiMatteo will be
responsible for developing and coordinating the programs for the annual
EAA AirVenture Oshkosh fly-in, "The World's Greatest Aviation
Celebration."
DiMatteo recently retired from the U.S.
Navy as a captain following an impressive career, which included leading
2011's Centennial of Naval Aviation Foundation programs nationwide. In
more than 20 years as a naval aviator, he flew more than 5,000 hours in
five different fighter aircraft, including 72 combat missions in support
of Operation Desert Storm. Read

LIGHTSQUARED
FACES EVER INCREASING OPPOSITION, BUT GPS NOT SAVED YET
FCC seeks additional public comments
After the National Telecommunications and Information Administration
(NTIA) concluded that LightSquared's wireless broadband signals
interfere with millions of GPS devices in use today - including for
aviation navigation - the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
announced Wednesday that it is asking for more public comments prior to
making the final decision to withdraw the Conditional Waiver Order
issued to LightSquared last year. Withdrawing the Conditional Waiver
Order will kill LightSquared plans to establish a high-speed wireless
data network. The final FCC decision is anticipated no later than March
31, 2012, and if the waiver is canceled it gives a complete victory to
the Save Our GPS Coalition, of which EAA is a member. The coalition has
been vehemently opposing LightSquared's proposal for the past
year. Read more

AIRFRAMES NEED EXPERIENCE, TOO
Sikorsky helicopter
president Jeff Pino was talking about the company's S76 twin
engine helicopter that will soon be offered in yet another
evolutionary version, the "D" model. The S76 has been
in production since 1979 and continues to be one of the most
popular helicopters for executive use, along with serving the
offshore oil industry, emergency medical service and many other
vertical lift missions. What Pino said is "there is no
regulatory replacement for actual experience" referring to
the outstanding safety record of the S-76. It suddenly dawned on
me that every pilot or aircraft manufacturer knew this years
ago, but some have lost sight of this proven fact in recent
years.

VINTAGE
AIRCRAFT OWNERS WIN IN FAA REAUTHORIZATION
Some
vintage aircraft owners got a big win in the FAA Authorization Bill
signed Tuesday by President Obama, as the measure included an
EAA-supported provision that authorizes the FAA to release certain type
certificate and design data for aircraft no longer supported by a
manufacturer. The specific element of the bill (Section 302) provides
that the FAA can release "abandoned" data that is essential to
safely maintain and operate vintage aircraft. That includes data for
aircraft such as those built by long-defunct companies whose type
certificates were not acquired or maintained. Three years is the initial
threshold for inactivity. It also gives the FAA the authority to declare
that data as abandoned, or releasable to the public if aviation safety
will be enhanced by the information for aircraft, engines, propellers,
and other aircraft appliances. Read

ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL SKIPLANE FLY-IN THIS WEEKEND
This
Sunday, February 19, marks a truly unique winter flying event - the
International Lake Memphremagog Ski Fly Meet, held on frozen Lake
Memphremagog situated along the United States/Canadian border in both
Vermont and Quebec. Pilots from both countries fly in, make sure they
remain in their country's airspace, and land on designated areas on
their side of the border. During this event only, both U.S. and Canadian
border authorities allow attendees to interact with their cross-border
comrades, have lunch together across the border, and get close looks at
each other's aircraft. Read

ICON
COMPLETES SPIN RESISTANCE TESTING
ICON
Aircraft announced that its A5 LSA amphibious single has passed the
FAA's requirements for spin resistance under the FAR Part 23
certification standards. Because it is an LSA, the ICON does not need to
meet Part 23 rules, but its makers say that it has. The basic
requirements for spin resistant certification is that the airplane fly
through a 360 degree heading change - or for seven seconds, whichever
comes first - with the elevator control in the full nose-up position
throughout the turn. During the maneuver the airplane must remain under
control and not fall off into a bank. And the maneuver must be
demonstrated at the full CG range, at various power settings, and with a
variety of rudder and aileron inputs, including crossed controls. Read

REAUTHORIZATION BILL SIGNED INTO LAW
President Obama today signed the FAA Reauthorization Bill into law,
ending a five-year wait for long-term FAA funding and ending a string of
23 short-term funding extensions. One week after the Senate passed the
measure and sent it to the White House, the president approved the
measure that offers a number of victories for GA. Among those are no
user fee provisions or fuel tax increases. Read

ONEX EARNS FAA KIT APPROVAL
Sonex
Aircraft LLC has earned kit approval for its single-place Onex from the
FAA National Kit Evaluation Team (NKET). Sonex General Manager Mark
Schaible made the announcement during this week's EAA webinar about the
Onex (pronounced "One-X"). The FAA will now publish an
amateur-building checklist for the folding-wing, sport pilot-eligible
aircraft, which will allow Onex builders to show compliance with the
major portion requirement of the 51 percent rule. NKET approval is not
only important to builders in the United States, but also to builders in
many other countries whose aviation authorities base their homebuilt
aircraft regulations upon NKET approval. Read

Auxiliary
Rotary Engine for Electric Aircraft by L-3 |
 |
A
rotary engine is being developed by L-3 Communications as part of the
hybrid power system for an electric aircraft. The R350,
L-3/Magnet-Motors' electrical motor and drive system, was showcased in
recent airliner electric taxi trials. L-3 plans to translate that
electric technology into a propulsion system for large stealth UAVs,
with the new heavy fuel rotary engine to provide auxiliary power. |
Hexplane
Has Three Wings, Six Engines |
 |
The
concept design of a Hexplane commercial airliner was unveiled in early
2012 by Oliver VTOL LLC. This three-wing, six-engine VTOL aircraft is
based on a Boeing 737 fuselage and will have a range of 1,500 miles at
425 mph cruising above 30,000 feet. The company claims Hexplane is the
first VTOL design that can "continue to perform full gross weight
vertical operations if a propeller, engine, or a gearbox fails." |

World's
First 4-D Flight |
 |
A
flight using four-dimensional optimized and upgraded Air Traffic
Management (ATM) technology, covering longitude, latitude, elevation,
and time, took place recently in an Airbus A320. Considered the
world's first 4-D flight, this could lead to reduced emissions and a
significant improvement in fuel efficiency. It is also expected to
give passengers shorter and smoother flights with fewer delays,
providing needed relief to the European air traffic control system
that is nearing capacity. |
Stealthy
Airship Looks Like Segmented Worm |
 |
The
U.S. military has an unusual looking stealth airship being developed
and tested for them. The Argus One looks like a segmented worm flying
through the sky and is classified as semi-stealthy because the only
radar-reflecting portion of the aircraft is the payload bay in the
front section of the airship. |
