The current pickup seems to be using a gasket to seal it (I haven't tried scraping it off, yet. I know I don't need the o-ring to hold pressure the way they have to on the filter housing, but it can't leak the least bit of air either, right? Two gaskets is pretty simple, but then again, two o-ring recesses is just a few minutes with a 20mm mill cutter.

Ditch the spacer and make the sump a little shallower. After my overly large sump got round-filed, and Ed recommended that the stock oil sump could be quite a bit smaller for our purposes, that's the solution I ended up with. The upside is that you'll have to carry less oil around, and if you use a thinner material (I use .025" 4130) you can make the sump lighter. You're not (hopefully) going to have road debris banging against your sump, so you don't really need the .050" thickness.
