While ground running today (I'm up to 2 whole hours!!) I had a hard start at the beginning of my second run. Gotta remember the fuel pump! As a result, the voltage was somewhat low. It started to recover as the alternator did it's chore, then I noticed the low voltage alert on the EM-2...the voltage value was flashing. Very catchy.
A moment later I heard a little "Pa-Ting!" sound. I noticed one of those little flange head bolts that Madza uses laying on the ground near the right wheel.....Hmm, That can't be good?
Coolant temp 154 *F & pressure 11 PSI. @ about 2200 RPM. Hmmm..that's OK....still, I'd better idle down and shut off.
A brief investigation revealed a loose water pump pulley, with one bolt gone, one in my hand and 2 loose bolts still holding things together.
That caused a loose belt and low alternator output. A little more time and things would have gotten much worse. If flying, even worse yet.
Did I forget to final tighten those bolts? Perhaps they go in with locktight next time?
I'm dealing with little water and oil leaks, drips and damp spots. This is a great time to play with my 'creation'.
I'll sure miss Mike's input, he's been one of this group, an inspiration for me, and I'd really been looking forward to meeting him (and the rest of you guys) when I finally get my RV-8 flying and travelling.
