 I have been scraping and washing in a parts washer the forward end housing

A cup style wire brush with twisted wire sets will take anything off of cast iron without hurting it.
 
Not for any other surface. Just cast iron. Use in a low to medium speed drill motor.
 
A face shield and safety classes. Thick gloves and long sleeves.
