I think I have a place for locating my future Turbo. I achieved this from playing around with clearances etc. In the attached photo…it is attached using an HKS turbo exhaust manifold installed UPSIDE down. I may have tried to adapt it for use upside down with a hard 180 degree turn from the waste-gate exhaust which is facing forward, unfortunately the waste-gate “arm” is in actual contact with the bottom of the injectors. This location of the injectors in the Mistral intake has been the issue with using the aftermarket turbo manifolds.
I originally had a three inch extension that was between the engine and the turbo manifold, however, when I place it all together with the wings on, it interfered with the aileron arm and cables. Sigh.
I do not know a good way to not have the waste-gate arm from heating the injectors, even though they do have a stainless enclosure.
The position as shown, would cause me to have to slightly modify the lower cowl with a blister to provide clearance between the turbo’s hot side and the cowl. I will be trying to figure out how to get a custom manifold made and will likely see if I can bring the turbo in about another inch closer to the engine to alleviate this blister/bump on the lower cowl. It would also move it a bit further from the wing. I hope having the HKS manifold will help give the fabricator an idea of what the hell I am talking about if I can’t get him/her to the hangar. YES, I do not know how to weld....the shame, then shaaaame.
Y’all’s thoughts are sought and appreciated.
All the best,
