Excellent suggestion Lynn. In my opinion very likely that is the problem. Perhaps room for idler to increase belt wrap?

Bending common Vee belts backwards is not common practice, although it seems to be popular on light helicopters where a gang of roller skate wheels tension a belt system to power the main rotor blades.
But, those belts may be discarded on a time schedule.
