With respect to the tach, I suspect that you had the primaries turned off, (or a possible bad connection that caused them to go off) and it was running on the secondary's. According to Tracy, the tach should then read 0, but I had the same thing as you did, namely that 'noise' on the line when not getting the proper signal from the primaries caused the EM2 to register double the rpm that the engine was running at.
