Kelly, Looks to me like that’s a reasonable approach on a six port because I do recall that primary port is pretty small.

And I have seen one with the secondary’s combined and that just looked too big for our application.  But, I guess as Lynn said if you are going to buzz up to 10K then that radical porting is good.

My experience has been what is the cat’s meow for racers generally sucks for our application.  My first intake was a dual throat Webber TB with 4 injectors.  Each throat was 2” in dia  can you say runner velocity was low at 4600-4800 rpm.  To make a long story short, aircraft performance and fuel burn indicated I was producing around 133 HP.

When I took that set up off and put runners of 1 ¼ - 1 ½” dia and the stock smaller Mazda TB my performance improved to where I could turn 5200 -5400 rpm static with a 2.17 gear box and 68 x72 prop.  Of course, going to the turbo block, higher compression .

Bill and Ed,

I have street ported my 88 13B.......But only the primary ports (center housing).........It

is correct that you have to be careful not to cut into the EGR passages that are next to the

ports.............I used the "Mazdatrix" porting template...........I am including a link to their

how-to site explaining the porting process for the 6 port 13B.............I have no idea if the

trouble was worth the effort yet .............FWIW

Yes, I would no longer consider porting a six port myself, but back in 92 I knew a bit less about the rotary engine.  Besides, if the rebuilder had either talked me out of it OR had not charged me for it, the situation would have been a bit different.

I personally prefer the turbo block for porting myself.  I used the Racing Beat Street port on my turbo block and it really woke it up.

By the way, did Jason get his situation sorted out?

Ed,

I guess you have seen the Mazdatrix web site where they discourage the whole porting thing with a 6-port.  Just the opposite of what Lynn proposes.

That's interesting to hear, Bill.  My first engine was an 86 N/A that was suppose to have been street ported (I paid to have it done), but when I later tore it down, much to my surprise there had been no porting done.  So I ported the next engine myself – at least I got my money's worth {:>).
