Started to put my 13b back together tonight. Went out of my way to make sure
everything was organized and readily available before two of my close
friends arrived to help (a fellow cop and an engineer who owns a company
that puts "factory "A/C systems in GA Aircraft the likes of which are
Cirrus, Mooney, Columbia, etc...he is also building an RV-7 with an
Eggenfeldner Sube).
Had all the reference materials on hand, Bruce's video on the laptop. We
are good to go.
Damn it, we opened the Hylomar and it was all but a solid. Would not come
out of the tube. It seemed a little softer in the middle of the tube so
using a pair of pliers to get a bit out (the tube finely tore open) we tried
to force it in the grooves and it just mostly balled up. Did not work well
at all. It took the entire tube to just be able to get enough to do the
front housing. Bruce's video shows the stuff being brushed on ever so
nicely....not this stuff. My buddies went to three local auto parts stores
to find some more....no joy.
I noticed that the shop manual...and I think Haynes manual, says to use
Petroleum Jelly and it is used just to hold the O-rings in during assembly.
This seems to indicate the O-rings seal fine all by themselves. Is the
Hylomar so superior and able to prevent other problems from developing? Is
it really needed or just gives an extra comfort level?
I plan to see if the parts store near work can order some that may be able
to arrive before I get off duty tomorrow. They once mentioned they may be
able to get it, but it would take a while to arrive. Also, there are a
couple of speeds shops nearby. However, if I don't find some, is it really
needed? Again, no mention in the shop manual. Thus I would assume it has
just become "conventional wisdom" as one more good idea.
I need to call Mazdatrix and tell them to check their stock. I don't know
if it had just been sitting on the shelf too long or what, but this stuff
was not useable. It being kinda pricey just adds fuel to the fire.
It's always something.
All the best,
Chris
