Presumably, because they're designed to withstand the pressure inside an air conditioning circuit.  They're on the low pressure side of the circuit when the AC is on, but with the circuit off the pressure equalizes to a high value throughout the inside.

Now, GM chose to use a thick core, probably to maximize the negative deltaT, but they could have....
