You are correct when you mention that the FAA does not have a "list" of approved or unapproved drugs (I couldn't find anything either).  The AOPA website does have a list that they say was compiled with the cooperation of the FAA.  Also, take a look at this site for what appears to be up-to-date info:  http://www.leftseat.com/medcat1.htm.

The last I heard (and read on the FAA website ) is that they have abolished the "forbidden list" of medications.  I can no longer find that list anywhere on their site anymore (I used to check it periodically) so if you know where it is I'd like to have that link.  Anyway, their (FAA) story now is that if your AME approves of your use, OK City will approve it as well.   Might pay to have a sitdown with your AME (not during 3rd class physical) and ask him straight out.  Not what we usually expect but Who knows, maybe there is a bit of sanity on this issue at FAA.
