Switches have bitten more than one, Chris.
There was one individual who burnt out a couple
EC2s because he purchased some bargain switches. Most double throw
switches "Break" before "Make" - meaning the common part of the switch
Breaks the old contact before Making the new
contact. However, there are some (not too common) which "Make" before
"Break". The old contact is still connected to the common part of the
switch when it makes connection with the other contacts of the
switch.
In this case the "MAKE" routed 12 Volts to a pin
that could only handle 5 volts before the "Break" action happened and removed
the common pins of the switch from the 12 Volt source. This can really be
a puzzle to diagnose after putting switches in - because if you measure the
voltage before and after the switch action everything appears normal. Its
only a momentary contact during the switching action that the two circuits are
connected - so once the switch action is completed the incriminating MAKE action
is no longer apparent.
The bottom line is all switches are Not
alike and I recommend checking with volt ohm meter to determine which type you
have, especially if you got them from a bargain or surplus
source.
Great to hear the good news!!
Ed
