The ceramic will be dark colored - dark c= harcoal - almost black. But, that would probably look that way with carbon f= ouling also. But, when I shine a strong light on the ceramic cone, light gli= tters off of what I believe to be lead crystals - if I am correct then that=20= could be a sign of lead fouling. In other words, carbon fouling appears to l= eave a dull charcoal/black color whereas the lead apparently leaves dark met= allic crystals of some sort.
