Hi George,
A 13B should be a comparable installation to an O-320 (per Aviator's Guide to Mazda Rotary Conversion, by Tracy Crook, eleventh edition 4-2002, page 109.) The 13B installed weight while comparable to an O-320, would give you slightly more horsepower than you require. IMO a little extra HP is not a bad thing. If you need a source for a used 13B you might want to try RX7 World (rx7world.com 866-230-6173.) Ernst at RX7 world found and rebuilt a 20B for me and he is very open to doing work for aviation applications (he is an A & P.) Buying a new engine may have some merit - if you have a used 13B rebuilt it can cost almost as much as a new Renesis (rebuilding yourself may have a bit more savings.) One advantage to the Renesis is a lower EGT than the preceding 13B engines, making the exhaust system reliability a bit easier. The trade off is a slightly higher cooling load, but that should not be problematic for your situation, since you will not be pushing the total HP capability of the engine in your situation. I am building a Velocity and am installing a 20B. When I was shopping for an engine, I was told that 20B's were hard to find and I would be better off with a Renesis, so I bought one. Later I was able to find a 20B, through RX7world, so I now have a Renesis available for sale that was built for aviation applications by Bruce T. If you decide to got the Renesis route, let me know and I may be able to save you a bit on the Renesis.
Hope this is helpful and I am sure others are likely to give you some good comments. I feel, The FlyRotary group is a great group, always ready to help and a great source of info. I would definitely not be as far in my own application without the info derived from this list.
Joe

Subject: [FlyRotary] Rotary for RANS S--16?
Hi list. I just joined recently. I am considering rotary power for my RANS
S-16 (www.shekari.org). I'm looking for a powerplant in the 130-140 hp
range. Most of the rotary conversions I've read about are higher power than
that. The S-16, for those not familiar, is a little smaller than an RV-6,
about 930 lb empty weight. Factory recommended engine is the IO-240
Continental at 125 hp, although several examples have O-320s in them.
I talked to Bruce Turrentine, and he seemed more interested in the Renesis
and sort of discouraged me on the 13B citing parts availability. I guess my
question for the list is, is there a good configuration for that horsepower
level, maybe the 12B or something else? I would plan on using Tracy's
reduction drive and engine controller.
The bare engine weight of the IO-240 is 240 pounds by the way.
Thanks,
-George Harris
